For this reason alone, I always recommend that if you're new to the online world, you need to first join an Internet based network marketing business at least to learn. Rest assured, no one will be selling you half-baked truths when their success ultimately depends on yours.

No matter which model you choose, make sure you understand the basics, and stop listening to and buying things that are not applicable to your business. Information overload can stop you before you even get started.

It came up conversationally, but I believe I'm the only person at my company to have firsthand experience as a user of Facebook.com.  It was kind of funny to have all these online advertising professionals asking me all about the website everybody used in college.  Didn't they get the memo?  I'm new.  I should be asking the questions around here.  The subject of Facebook.com is an interesting one that's worth a closer look.

Without question 2005 was the year of MySpace.  Before Rupert Murdoch's $580 million social networking venture took the interactive world by storm, it's difficult to believe that even the most optimistic of the billionaire's lackeys would have predicted that new acquisition would more than quadruple its reach within a matter of months.  With 23.5 billion page views by February, MySpace became the second most trafficked site on the Internet. 

Murdoch's success naturally generated buying interest in anything deemed online social networking.  One proposed deal in March 2006, was Viacom's unsuccessful $750 million bid for Facebook.com, the phenomenon started by wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg.  After Facebook.com declined the offer, its founders pegged Facebook.com's worth at two billion dollars.  Perhaps the brilliant sparks from MySpace's success has blinded Facebook.com to the flipside reality of Friendster's paradise lost.  There's a real chance Facebook won't see an offer this generous again.

Zuckerberg was likely trying to establish a market value for his creation, not an unwise move on the face of things.  However, Viacom's offer was not by any stretch of the imagination pocket change and the number of entities that can and will double the bid Facebook already got is finite.  

Facebook's traffic numbers, as referenced on Alexa.com, during the last three months are not encouraging; that is, if the goal is to fish for more and greater buyout bids.  The numbers actually have trended downward since March, anathema for enticing hyper bidding growth.  These diminishing statistics can be at least partially attributed to the cyclical nature of the school year since Facebook, after all, is geared towards the college student.  It doesn't matter how great the product is, it won't keep students from doing their own thing during summer vacation and this yearly dip is potentially damaging. 

Seeing as how fast online fads can expand and contract in social networking as we've seen in its short time span, what if the numbers don't come back?  What if something new pops up in two months that steals Facebook's thunder?  (And, again, MySpace's success serves as good reason why this thunder is worth stealing.) 

Facebook success has also been marred with some controversy that could taint its popularity with students.  At Syracuse University a flap over freedom of expression ensued when a Facebook.com group went overboard in critiquing a student teacher and ended up with expulsions from the class and social suspension before three students transferred.  After Penn State's football team beat Ohio State this year students rushed the field and made a ruckus.  Overwhelmed police made only two arrests that day, but later in the week they logged onto Facebook.com and, like Canadian Mounties who always get their man, got plenty of names and faces and photos from the info posted by students about their on-field shenanigans.  Kids talk and these stories spread like wildfire, which may affect Facebook.com negatively – they can't control misuse of their product and the negative repercussions that come from it.  

The future is promising for the social networking business space and I don't believe Facebook.com is doomed.  Still, given the nature of short-lived and over-hyped dotcoms, Facebook may have reached their growth climax this school year, with possibility for expansion and success only contingent on acquisition.  Time may not be on their side because as the pages of the calendar turn there will doubtlessly be new fads and trends that will threaten to make something else the "Next Big Thing" at Facebook.com's expense.   The clock is ticking.

Perhaps I should explain, and maybe tell a bit about myself first. I found myself at the age of 60 widowed, no income, having to sell my home to try and keep my head above water financially and to top everything I had been diagnosed with a progressive and though not fatal neurological disease one for which there was no cure.

The first phrase that comes to mind when I look back is PANIC. Where do I go from here, no home, no income and no job or even any likelihood of finding one with my medical problems? I managed to solve the first one relatively quickly and found a house to rent, however that in itself along with my financial situation led to "how do I pay the rent".

Okay, I was 60 so I had a state pension but nobody ever got rich on the old age pension, it would pay my rent but little else.

Suddenly out of the blue came what I thought was the answer to all my prayers, it was an invitation to subscribe to a monthly guide to make me a millionaire in three to five years at the cost of only £30 per month. So, I signed up but unfortunately because I did not have the basic expertise I got nowhere with it. Then again out of the blue just as I was about to give up and admit defeat I was invited to a weekend boot camp where I would be given all the help I needed from successful internet millionaires. So, out came the credit card and I signed up but because it was at the opposite end of the country from where I lived I also had the added costs of a hotel and train fare.

I enjoyed the weekend and came away with many hundreds of pounds of resale items and videos and I signed up to yet another course which maxed out credit card number one. The course was to be sent to me from the US within a couple of weeks. When it arrived I just didn't know where to start, there were so many books, videos and cds that it literally blew my mind. I tried wading through them but all that happened was that I became even more confused and eventually gave up. I wondered how these guys were so much brighter than I, I told myself that I was no dunce as I hold a nursing qualification and a teaching diploma but I just couldn't get my head around it until the penny suddenly dropped. There had been in excess of 4000 people at this weekend and I am sure that nearly all of them bought one or other of the courses that were for sale plus most people bought the videos of the weekend. These seminars were held at regular intervals and mostly sold out. So work it out for yourselves as to how much these guys made from them, no wonder they were millionaires!!

How sick did I feel and I vowed never to get taken along again, but guess what the headless chicken really took over, I ended up trying everything that was offered on the internet and boy when they know you are looking to set up an online business do they contact you with the most amazing offers and ideas imaginable each for just a few pounds a month, the problem is that you lose track of what you have signed up for and those few pounds soon max out card number 2.

At this stage you are not only broke but in debt as well and a lot worse off than you were to start with. Plus what you also lose is time as your inbox fills up with information from every site that you have signed up with and you spend nearly all of your time trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff and so you lose the most precious commodity of all, time. By now you are really feeling depressed and defeated and don't know which way to turn.

If I can get this message across to just a few people out there who are just starting out then I feel that I will have done a good job. What I did was cancel everything, unsubscribe to everything and start from scratch with a totally clean slate. I made my mind up that even though I was broke I had to do some homework and look at what was out there that would realistically get me started. After much searching I came across the PIPS site which offered me what I felt I needed which was a structured system with day by day instructions over a 30 day period, I could make the 30 days last as long as I wanted. I could also revert back as often as I wanted to clarify things, finally I could actually see where I was going and more importantly how to get there, it is such a shame that it took me so long and cost me so much before I discovered that there is no substitute for planning and taking things one small step at a time. If I were starting from scratch now I would save myself thousands of pounds and even more importantly hours and even weeks of that most precious commodity, TIME.

If you are just starting out please, take these words of advice to heart, STOP, THINK, PLAN.

Take it step by step, don't fall prey to all the offers out there to make you a fortune overnight, take it from one who knows that there is no substitute for doing your research and planning your business stage by stage, the internet can give you a good living but only if you do things slowly and plan each step that you take in advance, don't rush headlong into things because I can assure you that if it were that easy the internet would be swamped with millionaires and of course it isn't.

Don't give up either because you can succeed given time and a lot of effort. Try a few of the freebies before you pay for anything, you will find that there are a lot of things out there that you can try for free before you waste your money. See if they are for you, if not try something else. Remember what I said at outset:

Necessity is the mother of what?

Make sure that in your case it really is the mother of invention. Learn from my mistakes and save yourself a lot of money and a lot of heartbreak.

If you're like me and do your shopping weekly or monthly, or maybe even on a tight budget, you always run out of things before the next shopping trip. Or fed up of trying to come up with different meals each day, or want to try a new recipe but haven't got all the right ingredients, then improvise.

Meals can be made out of virtually nothing. Or as my family calls it not a lot night' it's great fun experimenting and coming up with new ideas. I wanted to make a Stir Fry to go with the Chicken Curry I had made, I only had onions, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, I looked in the cupboard and found a tin of Hot Dog Sausages, I chopped them up, and threw them in. It went down a treat.

I always keep eggs and flour in, it gives you the base for a Quiche and you can add anything to it you want. Or you could make a Sponge Cake for dessert.

Pies can be made out of nothing, Cheese, Mashed Potato and onion mixed together with a little milk. Corned Beef makes a tasty pie. Sausage Meat, finely chopped mushrooms and onions, mixed together with an egg and a little black pepper.

Pasta Shells make a great standby if you're low on potatoes, just throw some grated cheese in with them, some seasoning and a few chopped tomatoes, gives them a whole new look and taste. Or put grated cheese, cream and a little chopped up Ham, then you have a Carbonara.

Pizzas can be anything you want them to be, made with leftovers or things out of the cupboard; even Baked Beans go well on a Pizza.

Slightly watered down Tomato Ketchup, or Brown Sauce makes a great base for a marinade, put in whatever seasoning you like, and brush it over Chops, Steak, Chicken even Sausages, gives it a whole new flavour, the kids will love it.

Even Mince can be made less boring, add onions and carrots pour gravy over, mix plain flour and butter together to make breadcrumbs, sprinkle over the top and Hey Presto! You have a mince crumble.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just use your imagination, and soon you will be creating all sorts of tasty recipes, even your friends will want to know your secret. Enjoy.
